Bothy Distillery in Glen Prosen
Where the road ends... the spirit begins
Nestled deep in Glen Prosen, on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park,
Bothy Distillery stands in a landscape once travelled by the illicit whisky smugglers of the Angus Glens. Here, where hidden stills once warmed the heather and secret routes threaded through the hills, tradition, nature and craftsmanship intertwine.
Inspired by Scotland’s old distilling ways and the rugged, elemental beauty of our surroundings, we are dedicated to creating exceptional single malt whisky with a profound respect for the land that shapes it.
Founded by Kim Cameron, creator of Gin Bothy, the distillery is rooted in sustainability, authenticity and the stories that have passed down these glens for generations.
As Kim explains, “This distillery is about more than whisky - it’s about creating a place where people can connect with
Scotland’s natural beauty and heritage. Our whisky is made using locally grown barley and pure Scottish water, with production powered by hydroelectricity and sustainable waste-reduction methods."
“Everything about the glen and the distillery is in synergy with our Bothy values of history and heritage,” says Kim. “We respect nature’s calendar, working with seasonality and sustainability. The botanicals for our gin are foraged in the Angus hills and our whisky is crafted using barley grown by our neighbours.”
Reflecting on the distillery’s home, Kim adds, “The land surrounding our distillery is rich with inspiration - from the wild heather underfoot to the untouched beauty of the glen. Glen Prosen is also home to Kilbo Bothy - the very inspiration behind our Bothy logo - so it feels serendipitous that this glen is now our new home!”
“With just one road in and one road out, this remote location is one of a kind. Its seclusion and natural beauty provide the perfect backdrop for crafting spirits that truly capture the essence of Scotland, while allowing us to champion sustainability and preserve the landscape for future generations.”

Building the Team
We’ve brought together a group of industry experts to help shape the future of Bothy Distillery and we’re pairing that experience with a commitment to employing locally. By creating opportunities for people in Glen Prosen and nearby communities, we’re building a team that blends specialist knowledge with the spirit of the glen.

Made in Scotland
The majority of the new Distillery Equipment will come from our homeland, with many of the pieces uniquely crafted to enable us to make the quality spirit we will deliver. Our stills will be installed shortly crafted by the wonderful team at Forsyths of Rothes
Set to begin distillation in Spring 2026
Bothy Distillery will produce a limited number of casks each year, ensuring every drop reflects the character, care and craft of its origins.
Here, on a historic smugglers’ route, we are bringing legal distilling back to the glen for the first time in generations - transforming a landscape once known for hidden stills into a place where stories, spirit and heritage can be openly shared.
Visitors will be invited to immerse themselves in the Bothy Experience - a whisky retreat shaped by landscape and legend, where guests can follow the old smugglers’ paths, learn our craft and connect with the heritage of Scotland’s hidden glens.
The land on which the distillery stands is currently managed by Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS), which aims to use the site to create jobs and support the local community.
“We are excited to welcome the Gin Bothy into Glen Prosen. The business has strong local roots that will only be enhanced by moving to the Glen, and we anticipate that this new venture will support existing and new jobs in the area as well as fostering sustainable tourism.”
Christine Reid - FLS Angus Glens Programme Manager
From Jam to Dram
The Bothy story began in 2014 with a passion for flavour, creativity and local ingredients. What started as a small jam making venture soon evolved into craft spirits when the company was formed in 2015 and the first Gin Bothy creations were produced. As demand grew, the Bothy moved from Glen Isla to an auld smiddy in Kirriemuir, opening the Bothy Experience in Glamis and expanding production with a larger still. Over the following years the range developed with rum, new spirit releases and international exports, while the business continued to grow its home in Angus. By 2024 the journey reached Glen Prosen, where the estate became the new home of Bothy Distillery . The next chapter begins in 2026 as whisky production starts in Glen Prosen, completing the journey from jam to dram and marking the beginning of a new generation of Bothy spirits.
